I have to turn you guys onto a fantastic blog I've followed for a while about food foraging and living off the land. Fat of the Land is the brain child of Langdon Cook of Seattle, WA. He is a self professed outdoorsman, foodie, and forager. The tales of finding edible ingredients and turning them into something quite amazing are both intriguing and inspiring. I made this dish last night based on a very simple recipe from this blog post: drunken midgets loose on flats. While I didn't forage for the clams or other ingredients, I will be looking to my family's large garden this summer and to the ocean/bay for much of what we eat whenever possible. Now...off to the sand flats at the Lynnhaven Inlet...

This clip of a horse race shot by photographer Dan Chung is a testament to how much potential there is in the new dslr's from Canon. The video was shot at 60fps on Canon's new camera, and slowed down to 23.93fps. The possibilities are limitless with video becoming a prominent medium for work in the industry. With print publications moving to online solutions and camera technology becoming more hybrid than ever, video as well as still production is the future.

In the coming year, I'll be putting that technology to the test creating a new product line. I look forward to development and I look forward to the possibilities... More to come...

Canon G10 for fun

I picked up a Canon Powershot G10 a couple days ago, and I love carrying what amounts to a rangefider/point & shoot - perfect street camera and personal/family camera on those days where hauling big gear just isn't in the cards. Totally shocked with the output of the G10, I've heard only the best things about it and it certainly lives up to its reviews. It is not in anyway a replacement for the larger SLRs, but works great for being compact, 100percent controllable and awesome all around. For the shot of Gabe and I, I put a 580exII in the hotshoe of the G10 and aimed it up at the ceiling - iso 80 with fantastic results.

Graphic Designer Sued : Stock Agency FRAUD

I don't normally post agenda driven items, but this hits close to home. Jon Engle, a prominent graphic designer, is being wrongfully sued by a stock agency, www.stockart.com, for copyright infringement - Here's the catch! Someone ripped off logo images from Jon's Logopond Showcase (a portfolio site) and sold them to the stock agency!!! WTF! GET THIS - the lawyer from the stock agency is now contacting Jon's clients telling them that the work done is a violation of copyright!!!! Faves: Sanborn/Tower of Power Concert

At a numerous points during the show I was onstage with the band. This made for some unique perspectives of concert photography. This was a fantastic shoot, and with the dynamic range of the 5DmarkII there was NO problem getting what I wanted out of the night. Total blast. Thanks to Jason Ratliff from the Sandler Center for taking care of me, thanks to Wullie - Dave's road manager, to Stephanie at PRA Records, and to the guys in the two bands for making the photographing about as cool as it could have been.

I'm sending this post out to my readers who are photographers. Many of us spend our time with portrait subjects that we get to know through the booking and meeting process, or referrals through friends and past clients or people we already know. One of the hardest things, I've found, is approaching and taking a portrait (that isn't contrived or overly awkward) of a complete stranger. I'm not talking about sneaking into a capture with a long lens either. Getting an individual to open up and give you a window into who they really are, and not a moment behind the cheese in front of the lens is tough. There is definitely a talent in cracking through the shell of most people. Platon is a master at this and it shows in his work.

The best way to listen to this presentation IMO is to open Platon's portrait portfolio while playing the recording. He is going through a slideshow of his images from the portrait section of his portfolio and talking about his experiences. This has to be one of the most engaging, entertaining, heartfelt, and educational photographer presentations I've heard to date. Take the time to listen and peruse his portrait portfolio to key in on most of the portraits to which he's referring.

I photographed this man in October at a wine festival in Winchester, VA. He had a fascinating look and accent, and his personality radiated to everyone at the table. I looked right at him with camera in hand and asked, "Can I take your picture?" He looked, laughed and gave an honest look into the lens.

This is what I'm most thankful for in my life - my handsome, hilarious, huge vocabularied, cute as a button son Gabriel, and Candice the most beautiful, caring, hardworking, intelligent, loving mother and wife. I love you both more than words can say or fingers can type, you guys make my world go 'round.

It's funny how I always have to play game with Gabriel to get the expressions out of him that I do as a photographer. He has never once "cheesed" for the camera in his ripe old nineteen months, and every photo of him I take I've somehow tricked him into looking at me if only for a second. The photo where he's peeking through the door was in the middle of a peekaboo game that I know I took at least ten photographs to get that one portrait.

I photographed the awesome Harris family on the day before Halloween. As it turns out, I ended up drawing the face on the pumpkin that Gray is carving. Gray and Crystal, your whole family is fun to be around and I had a great time photographing you both along with your two beautiful daughters. John Chiara is a visual artist with a camera the size of a backyard shed. With one image perday on his homemade camera, he creates some beautiful but subtle artwork. John is quite the inspiration in the age of digital where many many shots will result in a few keepers. The goal I think we should strive for is making every shot count...pay attention to the composition, lighting, color, line...all when starting out and train yourself to shoot faster and more efficiently, but more thoughtfully every time you release the shutter...
